Mangaluru, Apr 16: The district administration of Dakshina Kannada (DK), taking note of the fact that the coronavirus second wave has been worsening in the district, has given importance to the bed management in government and private hospitals to ensure that the patients do not encounter any problems.

A total of 5,355 beds have been reserved for COVID19 patients in private and government hospitals in the district. At present, 199 COVID patients are being treated in hospitals. Therefore, there are 5,156 vacant beds in the district. At the same time, there are 1,152 COVID active cases in the district, and 90 percent of them are in home quarantine. 953 patients are in home quarantine.

Out of the above, 33 are being treated in Wenlock Hospital, two in Bantwal taluk hospital, 16 in Beltangady, and one in Puttur taluk hospital. The other 147 are getting treatment in private hospitals. The district as of now does not face any problem as far we ventilators and beds are concerned. Still, the district heath department is keeping continuous watch on the situation and it has been collecting statistics regularly. The health department, as a measure of abundant precaution, also is thinking of opening Covid care centres on the lines of the previous year, again.

The plan is to convert one block of NITK and also the ESI Hospital at Shivabagh in the city into Covid care centres. Plans are afoot to make sure that there is no shortage of beds even if the Covid cases swell rapidly. In the district Wenlock Hospital, 377 beds have been set aside for COVID patients. In dedicated Covid health centres, 166 patients are being treated out of 4,978 beds set aside for them.
