Udupi, Apr 10: A tempo driver was assaulted by police personnel for not giving the usual bribe.
This incident is reported from Moodubelle under Shirva police station limits of the district. The tempo was carrying asphalt.
Police personnel belonging to Shirva police station were checking the vehicles. When the said tempo arrived, they asked the driver to pay Rs 500 as a bribe. When the driver denied it, he was asked to bring the tempo to the police station.
The driver said that he was asked to sit in the police jeep where he was assaulted by the police personnel. The tempo driver identified as Shekhar Poojary has been admitted to the district hospital in the city. He is reportedly suffering from pain in his chest and neck due to assault by the police.
The tempo is owned by Hanumanthappa and the injured Shekhar Poojary was the one driving it.
Speaking to Daijiworld, Shirva SI Shrishaila said, "There was no permit for the tempo, which is why we have imposed Rs 500 fine. He protested that he will not pay the fine and tried to sleep under the jeep. Hence, we took him to the police station, leaving behind his vehicle on the same spot. He was made to pay the fine in front of the tempo owner and sent back."
