Udupi, Apr 5: The sewage treatment plant that was set up at Nittoor for treating the effluents of the city has become totally useless. The work of treating effluents has completely stopped. The reasons are that the wet wells which pump sewage water of the city to this unit have stopped functioning, and the grippers of the facility have developed snags.

The main aim of the plan was to treat the effluents from the city and release the same into the sea through the Indrani rivulet. People say that all the grippers of the treatment plant have stopped working and for the last some years, sewage water is being released into the rivulet without any treatment.

The unit had been erected in a 10-acre land at Nittoor out of ADB grant at a cost of Rs 5.5 crore by KUDCEMP in 2007. It has the capacity to treat 12 MLD of water every day. The major part of the mechanism is five grippers, out of two are working now, sources say.

As wet wells have not been pumping water into the treatment plan, effluents are directly flowing into the Indrani rivulet. Officials say that the problems will end in a few days. Municipal president, Sumitra Nayak, said that the wet well, pipeline work etc. will be attended to and the unit will be made fully functional soon.
