Mangaluru: No respite from garbage - Netravati bank faces pollution risk again

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Mar 30: The environmentalists are always worried about protecting riverbanks and public places from the risk of pollution. Hundreds of people, on the other hand, are finding places to throw their waste. In spite of the spreading awareness, it is not easy to maintain the environment clean. Netravati riverbank bears testimony to the truth behind this statement.

Most of the areas in Ullal are full of filth and garbage. Whoever travels by the main roads here is sure to get welcomed by plastic sachets of different colours and sizes dumped on both sides of the roads covering every conceivable space. Ullal, with a number of medical colleges, hospitals, IT company, university etc is considered to be a hub of education and health. But people from other parts of the country and abroad who visit this place are sure to get disillusioned at the sight of the garbage thrown everywhere.

The situation at the banks of River Netravati is horrible, to say the least. This spot has been chosen by hotels, dealers in chicken and other things as a dumping ground for the waste generated by them. Many a time the heap turns putrid and becomes a breeding grounds for diseases. The waste disposed of on the riverbank also gets into the river where the creatures eat them up. During the summer the garbage changes the colour of the water.

Considering these things, Green Brigade and Anti Pollution Dry Foundation, as a measure to create awareness among the people, waited by the riverside for a week in January to stop garbage throwers. They also reached spots which even the animals disliked to go, and removed loads of garbage and disposed of the same. Temporarily the riverbank bore a very clean appearance. Of late, however, miscreants have again got busy with the task of filling the riverbanks with unsightly garbage bags.

Nagaraj Anchan, a member of the Green Brigade, has decided to put an end to the throwing of garbage by people going for work. For the last three months, he reaches Netravati bank at 5.30 am from his house in Bajal and waits there for three and half hours. Nagaraj plans to end garbage disposal here and continue with his fight till the administration fixed the CCTV camera.

After the suicide of Siddharth of Cafe Coffee Day, under the guidance of MLA, Vedavyas Kamath, fencing has been provided to the bridge and two CCTV cameras have been installed. But both of them are turned towards the river.

Deputy commissioner of the district, Dr K V Rajendra, said that he will get an assessment as to whether the current CCTV cameras be used to stop garbage disposal. If not, he said, he will discuss the issue with the panchayat chief officer about either district administration or highways authority fixing cameras here.

Honestly speaking similar garbage dump is seen at heart of Mangalore city near Falnir junction. The more its cleaned, more earnestly uncivilised public dump Garbage. Vinayraj is corporator and he himself is helpless. MCC Commissioner is the biggest culprit for dereliction of his duties. For public awareness Garbage Dumping in public or private places is punishable under IPC 269 and IPC 270. Iam identifying and noting vehicle numbers of all vehicles which dump garbage, photos of people who dump garbage. Now I have silently gathered data of 200 regular dumpers at Falnir. The solution is very simple very effective. File a writ petition in the high court against all culprits that they are booked under IPC 269 and IPC 270 making the MCC Commissioner of Mangalore City corporation, health Officer, health inspector for playing their part in encouraging garbage dumpers by turning a blind eye to public outcry and dereliction in performing their duties, failing the central and state government in the swach bharat Mission drive even after collection of swach bharat cess added in property tax. We are consumers of Mangalore city corporation. As such case can be filed by effected public even in consumer court against garbage dumpers and officials of MCC for dereliction in performing their duties even after these officials Recieve their salaries by public tax payers funds. The state government officials and MLA MP's of south kanara all aware that the river is polluted before reaching thumbe dam and the water is pumped from the Thumbe Vented Dam. The river just before reaching Tumbe dam, there is small rivulet joins just before the railway bridge. That rivulet is connected to Nandavara. All the polluted water including illegal slaughter houses and chicken stalls and restaurants of that area contributing all the mess to this river. The officials should create a separate water lane on the side of the dam to pass this to the sea . The officials and the politicians know this problem but none of them are talking because this project will not economically benefit any of them. So all this polluted water get mixed from goodinabali area lime factory and thus becomes a good mixture before reaching thumbe pumping station. what we drink in Mangalore as on today is this polluted water. If any of the readers here has any doubts, then please take a trekking on the route I explained and then buy bottled water which could be sourced from a 300 feet deep borewell .

These are our smart city face. The urgent need is, keep at main areas keep good quality of dust bins. That can be emptied by rear end garbage dump truck mechanically. At highways also keep Dustbin on some distances. Collect garbage everyday or every second day. Recruit some inspector s to monitor Cleanliness.

Don't worry our local MCC councillors, Mayor and the MLA's will build desalination plants and supply pure water to the citizens of Mangalore. They are not worried about polluting the water bodies and destroying them. We have lost the Netravati water to the Ettinahole project and the balance we will lose to the garbage dumps and sand mining. There will be sufficient income with people to buy desalinated water in future.
