Mangaluru: Cleanliness goes for toss - Waste piled up on roadsides

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Mar 20: Even after the need to practice hygiene and cleanliness are being emphasized from all conceivable forums since the last some years, the people have not got rid of their habit of throwing waste by the roadside. Statements about environment conservation and cleaning of the neighbourhood seem to be confined to issuing statements. Because, plastic and other waste continue to harm the environment.

When one moves out of the city, he witnesses heaps of waste by the roadside. In some places, garbage is accumulated under the board that warns people not to dispose of waste there. Even though the system of door-to-door collection of waste is being practised in most places, the habit of tossing waste on the roads has not been given up.

On national highways, people come with plastic bags full of waste, throw them on the road and leave. Even though the local panchayats try to clear them, within days, garbage again builds up on the spot. Dogs and crows which try to find out whether there are eatables in these bags make a mess of it , leaving the area stinky and dirty. Leftover food, egg shells, sanitary pads, bones etc are thrown by the roadside. During the rainy season, the waste decomposes, giving jitters of new diseases to the road users.

Many have cultivated the habit of bringing garbage from their home when coming by vehicles and throwing them by the roadside. There are also others who come by cars and other vehicles to throw the garbage. Even though there is penal provision, it is hard to find out the violators and fine them.

It's mostly the well off, educated, who keep their homes sparkling clean who indulge in such acts of quietly dumping their garbage in secluded spots where nobody is watching! Such is the culture of this smart city!

Why the authorities can’t civilize the uncivilized? It’s high time to take serious action against those causing the mess. We are paying waste removing charges to municipal authorities why these uncivilized not punished with fines?

As bad as littering is, this is due to poor waste management systems available in place now. We should have better waste management systems and schedules put in place please.

A J mangalore ,do these cameras work?Because of last report, out of 93 cameras were only 5 were working.Best is let one person or two open some these bags ,find if one can address or personal code, note them with foto and send it to the person with charge s and fines .I am sure somewhere some spur mus tbe there.Such work is nasty but one has to do once to teach them a lesson.A hidden camera is better which one uses in forests to do fotos from animals.

it is very apt to call this city as mangagala ooru (land of monkeys) as it is a total mess.. I really wonder who picked mlore for smart city Mysore is comparatively on a much better level when it comes to cleanliness. If one is taken to statebank fish market, old port and central market he will puke if he is new for sure and they call it smart city..phew..
