Beltangady, Mar 19: ‘One who sings will pray twice’, the words of St Augustine always keep the faithful on their toes to praise and glorify the mighty deeds of the Lord. In the Mangalore diocese, Mangalore East vicariate is always known for its unique activities. In the previous year the priests of the vicariate had acted out a religious drama ‘Vinchovn Konachi’ and gave a powerful message to the audience. This year they have come up with a unique venture, ‘Keerthanacho Vhalo Aikovya Sorvesporacho Thalo’, singing the 150 Psalms, which will mark a historical event in the history of the diocese and in the history of the Church.
Among the 73 books from the Bible, the book of Psalms has a unique role. It was the prayer during the time of Jesus and Jesus prayed these Psalms in the temple and in the synagogue. During the Eucharistic celebration, the Psalms are sung and in the prayer of the church, the Psalms are prayed. In the liturgical calendar, all the Psalms are not included and sometimes the words are changed. Keeping all these thoughts in the mind, a unique attempt is made to sing the Psalms as it is in the Bible without changing the text. The music is composed according to the Konkani Bible text by Fr Dr Ronald Serrao, rector of St Joseph Seminary. The Psalms are sung by 15 groups of the Beltangady vicariate by over 350 singers for 24 hours continuously.
The singing of the Psalms will begin on March 20 at 5 pm with the Eucharistic celebration presided over by Bishop of Beltangady Dr Lawrence Mukuzhy. The singing will continue overnight and will end on March 21 at 4 pm. The concluding Mass will be presided over by Fr Dr Ronald Serrao.
