Zomato delivery executive who mugged Bengaluru model arrested

Bengaluru, Mar 11 (IANS): The Bengaluru Police on Wednesday arrested a Zomato delivery executive after a model-turned-makeup artiste posted a video clip on social media platforms alleging an assault on her.

According to the Electronic City police, the arrested person has been identified as Kamaraj, who works with the online food delivery platform.

Kamaraj was arrested shortly after Hitesha Chandranee took to Twitter and Instagram to air her woes, tagging the city police, which asked her to provide the area details to assist the police.

Acknowledging her complaint, Zomato's official Twitter handle mentioned that a local representative will be in touch with her shortly and provide all possible help in the police investigation.

Meanwhile, Zomato said that it has delisted the delivery partner from its app.

"We can't emphasise how sorry we are, rest assured we'll take necessary actions to prevent such incidents from happening in the future," Zomato tweeted.

"We deeply regret this incident and apologise to Hitesha for this traumatic experience. We are in touch with her and are providing our complete support through necessary medical care and investigation. Meanwhile, we have delisted the delivery partner from our platform," Zomato said.

Earlier, Chandranee had posted a video clip on social media, alleging that she was hit by a Zomato delivery executive on Tuesday following an argument over delayed food delivery.

In the four-minute video clip posted on Instagram and Twitter, Chandranee could be seen with a bloody gash on her nose, claiming that the delivery executive had attacked her after she confronted him over the delay in the delivery of her order.

Her Twitter bio says she is a model and makeup artiste, while her Insta bio states that she is a beauty and fashion influencer and content creator.

She has also claimed that she has suffered a nasal bone fracture.

Chandranee, who has 36.4K followers on Instagram, further alleged that the delivery executive barged into her home and abused her as well. The video has garnered more than 3.8 million views.

She claimed in the video that she had placed an order at 3.30 p.m. on March 9, which was supposed to be delivered by 4.30 p.m. After she did not receive her order on time, she got in touch with Zomato's customer support, and asked them to either waive off the charges for the order or cancel it.

According to her, when the delivery executive, whom she identified as Kamaraj, came to her flat, she asked him to wait as she was speaking to a customer care representative, which is when she says he started abusing her.

"The Zomato delivery guy came and he was so rude. I don't usually open the door because of Shushi (her pet dog). I opened the door a little and through the small slit, I asked him to wait because I was conversing with Zomato's customer support," Chandranee said.

"I gave him a choice, saying I do not need the order so you can take it. But he refused to take the order back and he started screaming at me, saying 'Am I a slave or what? You are asking me to wait here'," she alleged.

Chandranee added that she tried to shut the door but he pushed it back, took her order from the table and punched her on the face before running away.

Alleging that she has suffered a nasal bone fracture, Chandranee said, "I was given high power antibiotics and painkillers because of which I am able to talk. My nose bleeds as soon as I start talking."

"Hey Hitesha, thank you for speaking to us, we can assure you this is not the experience our delivery universe stands for. Our local representative shall be in touch with you shortly to help you with the police investigation along with assistance on the medical care required. We can't emphasise how sorry we are, rest assured we'll take necessary actions to prevent such incidents from happening in the future," Zomato had tweeted in response to her tweet.

The police have registered a case and are investigatingthe matter.

Most of the comments reflects the typical divisive mindset of the Mangaloreans where people see every matter from the point of view of Religion, Caste, Community, Colour, Nationality, Region, etc.... The only sensible comment to me is that of Mr. Roshan who condemns violence under whatever pretext. The root cause of the issue is that delivery companies now do not allow the delivery boy to take fresh order until the first one is delivered. Hence you can find these delivery boys riding very rashly at high speed, and breaking signals to meet the delivery time line in order to be eligible for the next order. In such a situation it would be frustrating for the delivery boy to wait. But that can’t be a justification for hitting the lady, however pretentious the lady might be.

there is only one sided story, she said he didn't arrive at 4.30 pm, but didn't tell if he arrived at 4.35 or 4.45 in which case the delivery boy is right due to traffic conditions few minutes delay is no big issue , unless this model/ makeup artist needs free publicity.

I worked in Bangalore for 8-10 years and my experience is as follows. The north Indians who come to Bangalore to work or study, assume themselves as white Europeans and look upon the local Kannadigas as Blacks. I have seen them even argue with airport officials during security checks. At every restaurants , offices , super markets, roads they wanted to be treated as special and priorotized. If not they hurl maa behen gaalis in their mother tongue that most of the Bangaloreans wont know. For sure here this lady might have abused this guy in Hindi gaalis taking him for granted and hence he responded aptly. No way any delivery boy would indulge in something like this. The law has to listen to both the sides.

These online delivery system is not proper. When we order for food, they say 40 minutes ( example) , and company wait for others order on that route, and wait for atleast 15 to 20 minutes. If they get fresh order, our order is pending and the time shows that my order will reach in 10 or 12 minutes. But suddenly my order time jumps backwards and shows not 12 minutes and it is 20 minutes. First we think that it will reach in 40 minutes then 12 minutes, but actually it delivery time takes 1hour. Because of multiple order, the delivery boy has to deliver one by one on that route. So it delays. We have to blame ZOMATO, or Swiggy for that clubbing order for one person, who is assigned duty on that route. I too fought many times and refused to take delivery. And it has become a big issue. We have to blame company not delivery executives. This is my opinion and experience.

Violence could have been avoided and certainly irrespective of what were the circumstances, the person has to plead guilty. There is no place to violence in civil society. Unfortunately, it is creeping up like anything, as people are frustrated within, may be with their current circumstances of livelihood. However, this is one side of the story. It is important to know the other side of the story as well. This is just to keep a level playing for logic, humanity and rationale on knowing what really went wrong.

people should be polite first & ask the reason for delay, it can be genuine reason-delay from restaurant or traffic jam, than to just complain to the customer care She also made him to stand outside & may be with the dog barking & who know for how long he waited & later she informed she doesn't need the order. he might have tried to open the door which might have hit her nose. Or may be the pet dog bite her as she wanted to cancel the order & the pet didn't wanted to cancel After the pandemic lockdown all are frustrated with jobs, finances & relations So be kind people

Very unfortunate. While i condemn the attack on the lady by tye delivery executive, it has to be investigated what lead to this incident. I wont be surprised if Zomato will be responsible for this directly, due to the pressure they put on the executives. If the reason is not found and if it is not addressed immediately, such incidents will continue to occur
