Bantwal: Organic manure produced from garbage ready for sale, use

Bantwal, Mar 6: The initiative undertaken by the municipal chief officer Leena Britto, with the support of civic workers in the backside of the municipal office with the purpose of managing wet waste, has succeeded. The fertiliser made from waste, production of which has started on a modest scale, is now ready for sale.

The garbage collected within the limits of the municipality is segregated into wet and dry waste at the waste processing unit. Later, fertiliser is being made from wet waste. Initially this was done in the backside of the municipal office, but now the work is ongoing at the processing unit.

Seven to eight tonnes of garbage is collected here every day on an average. The unit now has about 15 tonnes of fertiliser. The municipal council, after discussion, has fixed price of Rs 5 per kg for the fertiliser. A decision whether it has to be packed in smaller bags or sold entirely to fertiliser dealers has not yet been taken.

The wet waste collected here becomes fertiliser in 45 days. There is a need for a machine to shred the fertiliser once it is ready. A shed is also needed. Once they are implemented, the municipality can hope to get some money out of the garbage.
