Davanagere, Feb 25: Davangere city corporation's mayoral election, which witnessed a keen tussle, was held on Wednesday February 24. The BJP wrested both the posts of the mayor and deputy mayor.
The mayoral seat was earmarked for general category. S T Veeresh of the BJP was elected to that post. Shilpa Jayaprakashy was elected for the post of the deputy mayor.
Gadigudal Manjunath was fielded by the Congress for the post of the mayor, while Nagaratnamma entered the fray for deputy mayoral post. But both of them tasted defeat.
Out of 45 corporators, two have resigned. A total of 58 had the chance to vote including MLA, MLC etc. 29 votes were needed for victory and BJP got exactly 29 votes with the Congress candidates getting 22 votes. 51 corporators were present.
Congress was upbeat about winning the election. Even though the Congress went to high court questioning the right of MLA and MLC residing locally to vote, their writ petition was quashed. Moreover, corporator, Devaramane Shivakumar, who was projected by the Congress as the mayoral candidate, joined the BJP at the last minute, which robbed the Congress of any chances to win the mayoral election.
