Mangaluru: Untimely rainfall cools temperature, creates problems for farmers

Mangaluru, Feb 20: As predicted by the meteorological department, several areas in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts experienced rainfall. Some areas got rainfall on Thursday and some more got on Friday while a few places got rainfall on both these occasions. In the evening of Friday, some places got a drizzle, with some others getting normal rainfall.

Several parts of Kadaba, Beltangady and Puttur taluks also experienced strong wind, thunder and lightning along with rainfall. Ishwaramangala area got good rain along with storm. A tree which fell across the road at Meenavu Padpu on Sulliapadavu road blocked traffic for some time.

The city and surrounding places got drizzle on Friday morning while Udupi district was covered by clouds. Someshwar, Goliangady and border areas of Karkala taluk like Hosmar in Udupi district got rains. Kasargod district had a drizzle.

The Untimely rain created problems for the arecanut farmers who had laid out arecanut at the courtyard and other places on Thursday night for drying. As it rained again on Friday, they faced the problem of drying it as most of the arecanut are spread out in the courtyard for drying.

Scientist of Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, Sunil Gavaskar, said that on account of fall in the atmospheric pressure, clouds suddenly get together due to wind and rainfall occurs all of a sudden. He said that during the eastern monsoon, this is common. He said that after a couple of day s, the climate will return to normalcy.

    Early rains in the midst of hot weather is of course most wanted and truly enjoyable. There is one issue that needs to be highlighted is of farmers. Specially farmers cultivating fruits and vegetables do have to face uncertainties of the yields. Remember, no private entity or a corporation is going to take any substandard yield. Majority of farmers in India own small plots of lands. They take loans for seeding, fertilizers and agricultural activities, with substandard yield they loose everything. With APMC etc., they have some level of security, as it gives them a chance to voice their concerns with govt., and Govts in the past yielded. With Modi's agriculture laws, it is going to go. That is why they are protesting, to save their livelihood and life.

    If APMC was giving security to the farmers, why farmers were committing suicides and why 90 percent of the farmers are still poor.

    @Joe Indeed farmers suicides have to stop. APMC is not a fool proof system, APMC kept 95percent farmers alive at least so far, it needs improvements. But, Modi govt., is in reverse engineering. In Yr. 2018, Modi led Govt., asked state govt APMC not to pay bonus over and above MSP. APMC's used to disburse bonus in case better gains. Crores of farmers are not that ignorant and illiterate, who know nothing. Its matter of their livelihood and life.

    Roshan, still I feel if farmers were getting so much benefits from APMC why they are still poor and only 10 percent of the farmers (mostly politicians who are millionaires ), that means these rich farmers are taking all the benefits given by government and poor farmers are getting nothing.
