Puttur, Feb 19: A nationalised bank had deputed personnel of a seizure agency to take possession of a house in the city for non-payment of loan dues. In the presence of the seizure agency officials the wife of the house owner left a death note and hanged herself from a ceiling fan in a room of her house.
This incident happened near Haradi railway station road in the city on Thursday February 18. The lady who ended her life was Prarthana Prabhu (52), wife of Raghuveer Prabhu residing at Haradi railway station road. In her death note, she said she had decided to commit suicide as she was unable to bear the pressure brought by the bank officials.
The bank had served notice of non-repayment of instalments and interest on the loan. As the loan was not repaid, the bank approached the court. The court had issued notice to forfeit the house for non-payment of loan. The officials who wanted to enforce the house seizure order, visited the house when the lady ended her life reportedly because of loss of self-respect.
The seizure officials of a nationalised bank from Mangaluru had visited the said house with court order to enforce the order. Prarthana and her two children who were at home, became apprehensive and requested the bank and the court commissioner not to take over the property as the case is in court. But the officials refused her request and entered the house by breaking open the rear lock. On this occasion, Prarthana went to her room and ended her life.
The police who had escorted the officials for security took Prarthana to a hospital. The seizure agency personnel locked the backside and the front door, it is said. They also reportedly held a banner aloft about the forfeiture of the house and took a photo.
Chairman of urban planning authority, Bhami Shenoy, criticized the behaviour of the officials.
The spot was visited by town police station sub-inspector, Jamburaj Mahajan and others. Raghuveer Prabhu filed complaint in the town station about the incident. An officer of the bank also filed a report at the police station.
