BJP MP Surya explains why control over social media is needed

By Navneet Mishra

New Delhi, Feb 12 (IANS): Amid the row over banning many social accounts for not following the government's guidelines after they were found instigating the peasants' movement, the Bharatiya Janata Party has raised the demand to control social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

BJP MP and Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha national chief Tejasvi Surya has reiterated the demand.

Surya is also a member of the Standing Committee on IT Affairs. Following the latest episode, his letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 3 last year made headlines, stating that uncontrolled social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter were a big threat to democracy, and the need to enact strict new rules for regulation. Many party leaders believe that the government needs to take action in the issue that Surya has raised in his letter.

In fact, in a letter written to Modi on September 3, 2020, MP from Bangalore South Lok Sabha seat, Surya has stated the need to modify the 3(2), 3(4) and 3(5) of IT Rules 2011. Surya said that according to a figure in the country, social media has about 80 crore users. In such a situation, there is a need to create new rules and regulations for these social media platforms by reviewing the old IT-related rules.

The MP has demanded the removal of old guidelines and release of new ones in view of several recent controversies related to the social media platforms. He has said that social media platforms are taking advantage of the old flexible rules. Things have changed now and new guidelines are needed. The definition of all social media platforms should be clear in the new guidelines.

The Union Ministry of Information and Technology had identified 1,100 Twitter accounts involved in instigating the farmer movement through misinformation and directed them to close it. But Twitter, after closing about 500 Twitter accounts, refused to take action against other accounts, saying that as per the government's wish, not all accounts can be closed. Accounts have been blocked according to Indian laws. On Twitter's reply, Surya said, "Twitter seems to be above Indian laws. It itself decides which laws to follow or not."

Totally agree with the MP. If patents that form the intellectual property need to be registered in that country to be recognized, so also the SNS platforms so that they function under the jurisdiction by following local laws. Foreign funded opinion making and filled with vested interests cannot take refuge under free speech. There are many cases where they acted out of control. Most importantly, BJP with majority in the parliament should define clear laws within the ambit of constitution, rather than threaten with weak laws which never will stand a day in the court which only interprets laws of the constitution. SNS platforms have really gone out of control when they banned Trump from twitter. This is the country which professes free speech. I have been following this MP's speeches. Unfortunately, from the comments here, it looks like they cannot digest, because their historical context is flawed. He is hard hitting and yet to develop the mature niceties wherein truth not be told and public speaking is all about playing to the audience. Chances of him maturing fast is much better than Rahul Gandhi with PM & dynastic ambitions.

Democracy is where a citizen of this country has basic rights to live life as per ones will. Every citizen has the right to speak, preach and practice his / her belief in life. When our Govt Authorities and elected leaders understand this basic right of every citizen, things might fall in place. Ruling party leaders ( any party it may be ??) can talk, accuse, create fake accounts to create wrong propaganda, criticize women and any one in any abusive language - that is permitted. Who controls this Mr. Surya? Social Media is a way of people expressing themselves, just like how you do. Each individual will know to control his / her account in present days. Accounts which is fake, has derogatory remarks are those created by people who have no spine to face the bitter truth, need to be taken care of & I wish your IT Cell is able to do that. Please put your own house in order first before you point fingers at others.

The fundamental principle of a democracy is that everyone has a right to voice their opinion... ...and everyone carries a single vote. If the fundamental principle of democracy is needed to be stifled, one of the following must be true: a. The Government does not understand what democracy means b. The Government thinks India has become North Korea.
