Mangalore June 22: A seminar on ‘Child labour a social evil’ was organized by information department, Junior Chamber International (JCI) Suratkal and labour department in Committe hall, Ganeshpura, Kaikamba here on Sunday June 20.
Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) Commissioner Dr K N Vijayprakash in his presidential speech said that education is the right of every child. The children going to school with all the facilities provided for the development are on one side, and the children watching them going to school are on the other side. The sight is common in a developing nation like India. But the reason behind this inequality is the lack of information about government policies to the common man, he said.
Vijayprakash said, “For the welfare of the society and to maintain equality government has introduced compulsory education, free hostels and residential schools for the poor children. Children who are eligible for these facilities should utilize these benefits as to create a good society. Quality education and refinement is necessary for the purpose and with such steps social evil like child labor can be eradicated, he added.
Labour commissioner Sathyanarayan giving the example of Sivakasi crackers outlet that burned 39 children working in the industry after which the law became strong for child labour, said it’s been very difficult to inform about education to the children who came from other districts in search of work. So government should take action on the people who employee such children, he said.
MRPL Employees’ Union president Dayanand Prabhu, J C Dattatreya, JC president Seetharama Rai, District Information Officer Rohini, JCI President Shridhar Shetty were present. Janardhan and team entertained the audience by their songs based on evil of child labour. Karavali Janapada group performed a street play on the subject.
