Former Test Cricketer, Mangalorean G R Sundaram Passes Away

Mumbai, Jun 20: Former cricketer and coach of the Indian cricket team 76-year-old G R Sundaram, who played two Tests for India against New Zealand in 1955, died here today following a short illness.

Hailing from Padubidri in Udupi district, Sunderam, a right arm medium pacer, played in the third and fourth Tests of the 1955-56 home series against the Kiwis and took three wickets, after opening the bowling, including a personal best of 2-48 in his last appearance.

Sundaram was a renowned cricket player and a trainer with the Karnataka Sports Association here.  He is survived by his wife, a daughter, and three sons including popular cricketer and trainer Pradeep Sundaram.

Prof Ratnakar Shetty of BCCI, Dr Padmanabha V Shetty, and cricketer Jaya A Shetty expressed condolences on the demise of the veteran cricketer.

The last rites were held on Sunday evening at the suburban crematorium in Amboli on Sunday evening.

Cricketers Lalchandra Rajpat, Chandrakant Pandit, Balvinder Sandhu, Pradeep Vijayakant and several others trained by Sundaram arrived at his residence to pay their last respects.

    I was very sorry to learn of his death and showed the same to my family. On behalf of Braz family, we are expressing our heartliest condolences about his passing away. We pray that his soul be in peace.

    It was a sad father'day for all of us, his children, the players of Rajasthan CC and me a Times journalist for whom GR was a father.He always liked my company and called me thrice a week. My family would have a Sunday idli breakfast at his home with all his sons present.He was an exemplar as to how a cricketer should be in life after sport. He served Mekaster brilliantly and they wanted him even at the age of 80.
    That he played tennis til about a year ago testified to his fitness.
    A pity God took him away when all wanted him. Maybe God was looking for a lost Father on Father's day.
