Mangalore June 18: Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (MESCOM) has chosen to ignore the instructions issued by city mayor, Rajani Dugganna, Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister, Krishna J Palemar, city corporation (MCC) commissioner, Dr Vijayaprakash, and district deputy commissioner, (DC), V Ponnuraj, to take up precautionary measures to obviate problems that are associated with the monsoon season. These instructions had been issued both at the general session of MCC and at a meeting held at the office of the DC here some time back.
Mescom was sounded thrice on the necessity to take steps in advance to stop recurrence of problems suffered by the people during the rainy season. This is particularly applicable to Kavoor, where only three employees are seen struggling during the nights to undertake repair works and restore electricity supply to the area, which frequently plunges into darkness because of the severing of electricity cables and such other problems.
Daijiworld had asked the Mescom junior engineer on Sunday June 13 to press into service additional workers at night. Dr Vijayaprakash was also contacted and told about the lackadaisical handling of the issue by Mescom engineers.
Two cows and a calf were electrocuted because of a snapped electricity cable that had fallen on their path at Kuloor on Tuesday June 15. The citizens, who were alerted by this incident, stayed away from the place. Otherwise, there was every possibility of loss of a few human lives.
Mescom engineers do not seem to be taking note of the repeated instructions and early warnings issued to them, seriously. They need to shoulder additional responsibility during this time of the year, as even a slight carelessness on their part can account for human lives and property.
It is sincerely hoped that the Mescom officials will do everything within their command to ensure that this rainy season passes without any tragic incidents because of mistakes of omission and commission on their part.
