Chikkamagaluru: Cow steps on jowar - Upper caste people thrash Dalit woman, son

Daijiworld Media Network - Chikkamagaluru (SP)

Chikkamagaluru, Jan 8: In an incident reported form Hadihalli in the district, a group of upper caste youth brutally thrashed a Dalit woman and her son on silly pretext. The complaint was filed at 7.30 pm on Wednesday January 6.

The reason for the anger of the upper caste people was that a cow owned by a Dalit family stepped on the maize laid out in their courtyard for drying. The family had harvested the maize corns and collected the same in the courtyard of their house.

Injured Siddamma and her son Poornesh, have been admitted into Mallegowda government hospital here.

It is said that Poornesh was leading the cows belonging to his family home when one of the cows suddenly changed its course and walked on the jowar. The youth belonging to the upper caste were enraged by this incident. They attacked the youth and also broke the rear door of his residence, sources said. They also barged into the Dalit family's house, pulled and pushed the mother-son duo and thoroughly roughed them up, it is learnt.

After this incident, the situation in the village turned tense. Deputy superintendent of police (DySP) Prabhu, visited the spot and collected details. In order to stop recurrence of unsavoury incidents, as a measure of abundant precaution, police personnel have been posted there. Social welfare officer, Revanna, visited the spot and gathered details from the two. Vinay, Bharath, Parvathe Gowda and Manje Gowda have been named as the accused.

In the meanwhile, Dalit organizations have planned a protest and Dalit leaders have urged the administration to initiate action against the attackers. They also have urged the district superintendent of police to extern them from the village.

DySP Prabhu said that so far, no one has been arrested and the situation in the village is under control.

"Cow steps on jowar" it is just a reason for the fight. I still remember the argument (not fight) with our neighbor just for a cashew tree leaning in our land. These are all stupid excuses to express the anger with the neighbor and nothing else.

That is why the two parties quarrelled. Did they quarrel on Caste issue? Then what is the need of mentioning caste in the report?

Bharath Bangalore means do you find it is ok ,to thrash the boy and woman at home and brake their rare door ,?Because they are Dalits and Brahmins are upper caste?Sadly cow didnt know it :How dare one who lays hand on a woman thrash without any mistake or with mistake?should we call you as a educated one when you make such comments?Even a Brahmin too is not to be thrashed since he too is a human being. So treat even a dalit person too as human .Noone is upper or low caste before God.Previously these people were a working class ,had no chance to own land were not allowed to get education and Brahmins had land and money and power to treat other people as lower ones.Gandhi self had prohibited it.

Mr Mangalorean Mangalore, your respect about cows is really good.

But here in the report two parties are mentioned as upper caste and dalit. It is not reported that they quarrelled for caste related reasons.

Excuse me , did I mention something wrong? Its not me but among the notable Indian critics of the text in the early 20th century was Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, who held Manusmriti as responsible for caste system in India. In protest, Ambedkar burnt Manusmrti in a bonfire on December 25, 1927 and later along with 365,000 of his Dalit followers decided to exit the folds of Hinduism and embraced Buddhism.

This kind of hooliganism has to be condemned and the guilty punished. No doubt about that. There is also no doubt that in society there are prejudices against caste, religion... even sub-castes! But was this incident really about caste?

Don't people of the same caste /religion have disputes within themselves? Haven't there been physical fights and killings between members of same caste/faith? Why does the severity of an offence become greater when the offender and victim are of different caste/religion?

The upper caste youth are smart. They dealt with the cow keeper, not the cow. Repercussion of violating Art. 48 of Indian Constitution unimaginable. With what they have done, there is all possibility of being called 'mentally unstable' and getting out of the lockup.

Cow should not be let roam freely where ever it wants, Owner of the cow should keep in cow shed or they should keep in thier land. Why it tress passing other's land and disturbing?.

If they cannot take care of cow then better hand over to the government to feed the cow and take care. Any how this government is elected by the cow, for the cow and from the cow and the cow.
