Puttur: Young entrepreneur succeeds with experimental areca sheet plates

Daijiworld Media Network - Puttur (SP)

Puttur, Dec 22: When the degree he earned through conventional education did not guarantee him enough income to run the family, a youth chose to start his own business. Now he has grown in stature in the field of his business and has been able to sell his products through various markets all over the country.

The raw material used by the youth is the area sheets found in his own plantation and plantations in the neighbourhood. There are others involved with this field. But the uniqueness of this youngster is that he makes over 60 varieties of plates and items of other daily use. Nowadays, areca sheet plates, glasses and spoons are replacing plastic in functions and programmes as they are nature-friendly. The credit for introducing such nature-friendly things made of areca sheets goes to Srikrishna from Madavu, Puttur, in Dakshina Kannada district.

Srikrishna, after securing his mechanical engineering degree, was searching for employment when five years back he thought of starting his own industry. Noticing that areca nut sheets keep falling on the ground and they were going to waste, he got the idea to start a new business. As there were other industries competing with him, he undertook research to make his products different.

Srikrishna makes different shapes and sizes of plates, soap boxes, ice cream cups, spoons etc. He has created different designs of machinery as per his requirement to make these sheets. His products have entered states like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Gujarat. He employs 16 people and provides employment to ladies who have no jobs. He has shown the world that instead of seeking government or private employment, people can succeed if they undertake private enterprises backed by research and ideas.

It is good and innovative decision taken by an young entrepreneur Mechanical Engineer from Puttur and finally succeeded with experimental areca sheet plates. It has already entered into and abundantly available in almost all the states in different shapes and sizes.
Once our education is finished,it is always better to start our own business or any kind of trade rather than searching for an employment in government or private sector companies and stuck over there for life time for some paltry perks and with lots of pressure and tension. Srikrishna is the role model for other youngsters.
As somebody opined above,in olden days only Koragas, schedule caste, schedule tribes people were using for consuming their foods. However some people from agricultural background were using for making some items out of it like "Gompar,Muttale" etc for their personal use such as to cover their heads while carrying some agricultural products on their heads to protect from sun heat and pain on the head.
Nowadays it has become socio-environmental friend and more in demand everywhere like in marriage functions, festivals, temple's programme etc.
Anyhow I wish all the best to Srikrishna for his bold decision of taking this step and his success.God bless him and stay blessed

In olden days Harijens ( Koraga and schedule cast or untouchable people) used to eat their lunch in these plates. I wanted to eat in this chilli (the plate was called chilli ) but my parents never allowed me to use these. Few years back I enjoyed my lunch in this plate in Goa. In Goa, it is available in almost all tourist centers. Now the time has come to use these natural plates. let us support the manufacturer by using these plates and spoons. its good for health.

I also worked in Dubai for many years and by God's grace I had a chance to migrate to New York with my wife, daughter and son. My wife and myself are happily retired after working in different hospitals. I wish you all success in every way.
