Bengaluru, Feb 9: The United Nations general assembly president, Philemon Yang, has praised the Karnataka government's five guarantee schemes, which primarily benefit women. He commended the schemes for their significant role in women's empowerment and gender equality.

Yang met chief minister Siddaramaiah on Friday and congratulated him on the successful implementation of the schemes.

The chief minister’s office, in a press statement, stated that the guarantee schemes provide financial assistance to women and include benefits such as free bus travel under the Shakti scheme, free electricity under Gruha Jyoti, and free food under Anna Bhagya to curb hunger and malnutrition. Yang appreciated these initiatives, acknowledging their impact on women's welfare.

Yang further lauded the Karnataka government for promoting socio-economic and political equality through women-centric programs. He stated that Karnataka’s success would be shared in future UN workshops, enabling other countries to adopt these model schemes.

Additionally, Karnataka leads in renewable energy production, generating 40% of its total energy from renewable sources. Yang also praised the state’s progress in information technology, software development, artificial intelligence (AI), research, and innovation, recognizing Karnataka as a global hub in these sectors.

The state's chief secretary, Shalini Rajneesh, welcomed Yang with a bouquet made by women from self-help groups using silk cocoons.
