Mangaluru: Will Smart City works end Hampankatta circle woes?

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Dec 19: Road widening and concreting work are going on in full swing at the Hampankatta circle, located at the heart of the city. The concerned are making efforts to complete the work fast. But the pertinent question that remains to be answered is whether the vehicles have to take a detour as before, to negotiate this circle like they have been doing, even after road development works.

Till a few years ago, Hampankatta junction’s signal used to be the biggest signal in the city where a huge rush was witnessed. Later, the system was changed because of vehicular congestion and the signal system was given a go by. The vehicles were made to take a detour before reaching their destinations.

Vehicles needing to go towards Falnir now have to move till the Canara Bank (erstwhile Syndicate Bank) before turning to the right and return to where the circle was and then take a left turn. For entering K S Rao Road from Hampankatta, one has to move to the Clock Tower, take a right turn and return on the road till Hampankatta. This consumes a lot of time. With the concrete works the road is getting further widened. Many feel that it is better to remove the barricades which are blocking straight movement of vehicles, and install signals as before. This system will also help the ambulances to move faster and the vehicular density observed at light house hill and clock tower might come down.

With the installation of the signal, like other junctions, the police department can enforce a free left rule here. As of now, as road work is conducted, signal lights are installed. The police say that the work here might be completed in a month, and a decision about the type and relevance of the signal will be decided based on the traffic situation then.

MLA Vedavyas Kamath said that a decision on handling traffic at Hampankatta circle will be taken after holding discussions with the police department. M A Nataraj, assistant police commissioner (traffic), said that like other circles, here also free left facility will be extended and a decision about the installation of full signal will be taken. He however expects some problems with vehicles taking a turn to enter K S Rao Road.

I heard they will dig the recently developed Sturrock Road for laying drainage pipes and then once again to lay water pipes for 24x7 water supply under smart city plan. Great planning.

We can increase surface area of roads only with flyovers and underpasses and there is no other way as Rahul said! In order to finish the work in 6 months the contract should go to Foreign road contractors or L& T types to the least. It is possible with pre-cast sections and pillars as it is commonly done in gulf countries / Europe or west. Otherwise we are spending few times more money including maintenance and corruption! I wonder why our Indian road works and bridges takes years to complete.....is it because of democracy? In places like Dubai such work will be completed within six months....short term pain, long term gain!

What we needed in Hampankatta was a underpass or a flyover. But Our MLAs didn't want to risk of it being delayed and getting a tag like Nalin Kumar Pumpwell, i mean Nalin Kumar Kateel got. Right now its more of a beautification and less of problem solving. But common public will be fooled with these kinds of gimmicks.

One of the best example is Church Street’s Tender Sure Cobble stone road. Looks stunning on photographs and in real. But Parking problems are not addressed. There are more than 200 eateries and shops and hardly 25-30 parking slots available.

Mangalore will get good roads and credit has to go to Kamath, but this is not a load term problem solving solution.

I think if they shift the service bus stand and wholesale market to out skirt from the heart of the city, everything will be normal Traffic in Mangalore and I think politicians should not interfere in Traffic system because it is Traffic Police department should decide. This is my opinion.

From what I see Varanasi is becoming a model mid tier city by using smart city money. Some of the projects are very well planned and executed. I think smart city projects should have been managed by a dedicated central agency consisting of engineers who have enough training in city planning and project managers to plan and execute the projects. Some of the contractors who are given contract to execute those projects should also receive training so that they can produce quality work that meets the plan specifications. For instance, there should be footpath of say 3 feet on every residential area on either side of the road and say 5 feet on city streets and may be 10 feet on busy streets without giving room for street vendors to occupy. Parking is another huge problem in pretty much every city. If you create an additional lane on either side, that will become a parking place. Multi-stored parking is needed at major intersections of every city.

My first question is to you is, presently are you living in mangaluru. Because I can't understand your 75 years concept. Don't be a BJP supporter in a development issue. Vote whomever you want. If you are a non mangalorean then do not comment in non relative issues.

Smart city only fooling people, without the tag cannot we have good roads and footpath. The Hampankatta circle it is not a planned circle at all. Why do we need island in the middle of the junction, anybody noticed that? Newly constructed footpath alongside Wenlock hospital removed for the smart city circle. Hope we will have traffic lights and proper zebra crossings. Out station buses should not be allowed in the city and ban the private bus mafia and enjoy the city.

Shift to the main fish market (include dry fish) and vegetable market to another location, service bus stand to be relocated, RTO stop issuing new bus permit to state bank, even start paid parking, automatically the public will decide to move around.

Why are our leaders not strong enough to remove those dilapidated buildings ? The one that houses Komals, Ideal Ice cream and the two attached to old bus stand are very much bone in the neck. If one person proposes demolition, the other protects the shop owners.

Please political leaders, vote bank should not be always a priority. The area is looking like a 30 year old village while all other areas have developed much more. Take some strict action before it's too late.
