Udupi: Delay in Nagarjuna Thermal Power Plant Commissioning Likely

Udupi, May 29: It is learnt that the thermal power plant of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd (formerly Nagarjuna) set up at Nandikoor near Padubidri in the district, is facing technical problems since about a week. Sources expect that the first unit’s commercial generation of power may therefore, be delayed by a few weeks.

The first phase of the plant had been built amidst opposition from various quarters, and the trial run of the unit had been undertaken last month. The company had also expressed its intention to begin generation of power in the first week of May. It was claimed that the Chief Minister would formally dedicate the unit to the world.

However, since last Thursday, the unit has stopped functioning. Technicians are attending to the problem and the company hopes to begin production and start supplying power to the state grid at the earliest.

AND M/s LANCO COMPANY DOING VERY GOOD CONSTRUCTION AND THEM CONTRACTORS ALSO DOING VERY GOOD SUPPORTIVE JOB. AND ALSO MAIN PLANT AND CONVEYOR AREA AND HARBOR AREA OUT LOOK WORK IS VERY NICE.

    The environmental clearance given to the company in 2002 expired in 2007...isn't there anyone out there who can use this fact against the company and shut it down...it has its pros and cons, but the cons seem to outweigh the pros...government wake up...people of karnataka..know the grievences of local fishermen affected...they have lost their livlihoods and can't support their families...nagarjuna is run by the corrupt gas mafia of dubai...where is the justice???!!

    I thought that thermal power project was an asset to south karnataka, but the way things are moving the people concerned have fooled the nation.The project as on today has not run continuously for a month either the water pipeline bursts or some technical snag are developed.The project has been developed by unskilled labourers and manupulative contractors.All the local politicians are oppurtunists They are not committed towards the welfare of locals.

    karnataka has 80% share on generated power for its use and udupi mangalore can take all of it if it can consume that power.

    these things happened due to pipeline ruptures.moreover country like us has the largest installed capacity of thermal plants.India especially karnataka needs energy desperately.moreover the company has provided pollution controlling facilities like ESP and Desulpherizer.

    The damage to the environment has already been done thanks to the double standards of the environmentalists. The faulty sea water intake pipes have brought in salt water in the wells and fields.What more can we ask for rather than just sit and watch how much more we will be effected

    What is the use of the power plant if it is not to serve the local area. Are we sacrifice everything for the benefit of unknown people. The major benefit of every project must go to the local as a reward for their sacrifice.Will the Government listen to it.

    The Power Plant is still ineligible for Certificate of Operation. Neither FGD is installed nor the desalination plant. Chimney has not achieved the legally required height of 275mt. The owners Lanco actually installed debris collected from the scrap yard in China. Project neither has forest clearance nor the environment clearance for coal harbor. Worst still people in DK & Udupi will be eating ash curry instead of fish curry as the power will go to Bangalore and Mysore if at all the plant generates it, thanks to VSA & Co.

    I feel it is a bad idea to dedicate this project to 'the world' as it can be only a 'disaster in waiting.' Before nandikur is allowed to operate, the Central government must ensure the standard pollution control must be monitored by an independent authority. Usually, the sea does not accept anything foreign, and therefore the ash dumped is likely be returned to the shore, contaminating it and endangering marine life and marine related jobs.
    It would have been prudent if the nandikur management had contracted with the supplier of coal to ship back the ash.
    It is mandatory that the company has a full fledged crisis management team that is available 24/7. Also, the effects on environment should be closely monitored, because some one is getting richer at our cost.
    The current example is the failed "top kill" attempt by BP to stop oil spill in the gelf of Mexico.
    I urge the organizations (to name few) such as: The Nagarjuna Virodhi Horata Samiti, Nandikur Janajagruti Samiti, Mogaveera Mahajana Sangha, Tadadi Ushna Vidyuth Sthavara Virodhi Samiti, Swadesh Jagarana Manch, Samagra Vikas, Bangalore, Samriddhi, Kanakapura, Reach, Davanagere, Tenks Ermal Gram Panchayat, Padubidri GP, Kaup GP, Uliyaragoli GP, Ellur GP President and every person who is against this project, to put enough pressure on the nandikur management.
    Also, to see only one comment so far is surprising!

    The life of this plant may be hardly 2-3 years.They used sub-standard machinery & equipment imported from China even chinees equipment are rated poorer in pollution control
