Udupi: Santhekatte weekly market will be shifted to new building from Dec 6

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (HB/EP)

Udupi, Dec 4: A full-fledged market constructed in front of Mount Rosary Church, Gopalapura ward here at a cost of Rs 1 crore will meet the long-felt demand of people in the vicinity. Though the construction of the building was completed two years ago it was not inaugurated for various reasons. A press release from the municipal council states that the entire Santhekatte market will be shifted to the new building near Veerabhadra temple.

People residing will heave a sigh of relief from the crowd that would gather at the weekly market in Santhekatte. The weekly market has been held for the last several decades and recently extended up to a kilometre on divider beyond the service road causing a problem for the people and motorists. It used to hinder vehicular traffic on several occasions. Traffic police were always seen struggling to regulate the traffic.

Though the market was constructed, drunkards and boys on the street were found staying inside it as it was not left unoccupied. Daijiworld had also carried a news article which pointed out the issues being faced by the people residing in close proximity to the market.

Former district in-charge Pramod Madhwaraj had laid the foundation in 2018 and allotted a sufficient space for 90 people to sit and conduct business. All the basic facilities for traders and customers including water, parking and drainage have been also made available. The market is constructed in an area of nearly 17,500 square feet.

The picture of Santhekatte weekly market looks good but I hope it is well maintained by the civic authorities and also the shoppers.

The residents of Kallianpur have never been favoured by the Udupi Municipality
or the Udupi Public Works Ministry, to make it a planned village, some 20 years
ago. Right now everything is haphazard and unplanned.

First of all, the Santhekatte to Kallianpur main road should have been broadened
and paved with adequate drainage and adequate street lighting 20 years ago, but
there were no active Christian or Hindu Politician then. Now because Mr. Jerry
Dias has become a Developer and Builder, coming from a humble background,. He is now rich, Politician, Developer & Builder, and supports the Kallianpur community, for example he undertook the construction works of Mount Rosary Church. Raghupathi Bhat, is now taking interest in broadening the Kallianpur road, shifting of the Kallianpur Santh, etc. BUT, being a resident of Kallianpur,
no one understands why a flyover was not taken into consideration and design whilst executing the new highway - the designers have not looked at this necessity. Unplanned neighbourhood begins with Idiots at the helm of any governance.

It is totally not acceptable for people to block the national highway or the service roads . First of all Santhekatte Junction is prone to accidents and has not been planned properly at all. A small flyover to allow free movement of traffic on the high way should have been planned , right now there is total chaos at that Junction !!!!
