Mangaluru, Dec 4: In a gesture of humanity, a man becomes one fine epitome of Hindu-Muslim unity in Ullal by being a son to a childless Hindu couple.
Ullal is perceived from a different perspective by a section of people. Recently, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat compared the Muslim-dominated are of Ullal to Pakistan. But in reality, the situation is different here and people of the two communities (Hindu-Muslim) live harmoniously.
Retired government officer Devendra Putran and his wife were staying at Sri Hari Nivas in Subashnagar, Deendayal road in Ullal. The couple was married for several years but were childless which worried them a lot. The couple was also suffering from kidney-related ailments from the past few years and needed somebody to take care of them.
Their neighbour Razaq Ullal came to their aid during the time of distress. The couple had always treated Razaq as their own. He would avail himself whenever the couple called for help or during any time of emergencies and would rush to their aid without any hesitation. Razaq had also financially supported the couple to pay for treatment at the hospital before Devendra passed away. The couple would even forget being childless in the presence of Razaq.
When alive, Devendra used to express that even though they had no children, Razak was like a son and treated them as his own parents.
After Devendra's demise, Razak himself helped to bring the mortal remains from the mortuary and helped in performing the last rites at the crematorium.
When Devendra died, Razak in grief stated that he strived hard to save Devendra, but he could not save him. He has assured Devendra's wife and instilled confidence in her to always help her during any difficulties.
Only a compound wall separates the residences of Devendra and Razaq while the barrier of caste and religion is unknown to them.
