Bengaluru, Nov 23: The State Government has deferred a decision on reopening of schools for the current academic year of 2020-21 till the end of December in view of the COVID-19 pandemic situation in Karnataka.
This decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa held in Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru on Monday.
The consensus at the meeting, attended by Primary and Secondary Education Minister, Chief Secretary T M Vijaya Bhaskar and other senior officials of the Education and Health and Family Welfare Departments, was in favour of reviewing the COVID-19 pandemic situation in the State at the end of this year.
The decision against reopening of schools and pre-university colleges till December was taken based on the advice of the Technical Advisory Committee for COVID 19, Suresh Kumar said after the meeting.
The committee, in its report to the Chief Minister said that it is not advisable for schools to reopen in December.
“As December is the time for winter, respiratory infections are likely to occur more. Besides, the experts told us that this is the time Karnataka would likely witness a second wave of infections. This is why we decided not to reopen schools any time soon,” the minister said.
Another meeting with the Chief Minister will be held in the third week of December, where a decision will be made.
“The Health Department has suggested that we wait till December to see what the situation is like. We are giving importance to life. It is understandable that students in Class 10 are worried about board exams, but life is more important and we have always prioritised this,” Suresh Kumar said.
He further stated that besides high school students, students between classes 4 and 7 too will now have pre-recorded lessons, which will be aired on Doordarshan Chandana channel. The videos will also be uploaded on YouTube. The project is being called Makkalavani.
Suresh Kumar further stated that the Education Department officials had informed the Chief Minister that a lot of children, especially aged between 13 and 18 years, were dropping out of school and PUC to seek work and support their families.
“This too was discussed. The Health Department said it was better to decide in the third week of December,’’ he added.
He said that so far, the classes were being held on DD Chandana for SSLC students and that the syllabus would be completed by January.
Health and Family Welfare as well as Medical Education Minister Dr S Sudhakar participated in the meeting in the virtual mode.
The State Government did not want to take chances on the lives of teachers, staff and students in view of the COVID 19 pandemic as the total number of positive cases have already crossed the 8.7 lakh mark with Bengaluru urban district accounting for the maximum number of cases.
The Chief Minister earlier participated in the awards presentation function held in the banquet hall of Vidhana Soudha.
Yediyurappa presented the Chief Minister’s medals to the officers and staff of the Karnataka Forests, Wildlife and Environment Department for exemplary work in wildlife protection and conservation of forests during the years 2017, 2018 and 2019.
Forests and Environment Minister Anand Singh, Congress MLA Rizwan Arshad and other senior officials participated in the function.
