Mangaluru, Nov 7: Mark Rodrigues passed away on Friday November 6 at the age of 98. He was born in Kundapur on April 25, 1922, and was brought up in Mangaluru. He studied at St Aloysius High School and then joined the British Indian Army in 1940 at the age of 18 and soon after, he was dispatched to the Middle East War zone to fight for the allies, as the Second World War was in progress during that time (1939-1945).
In 1942, Mark was captured by the German forces and was held a Prisoner Of War at various camps in Europe. After seven years of active military service, Mark returned to India.
Thereafter, Mark completed his mechanical engineering and joined the defence establishment. After serving for 30 years in the defence at Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, he retired as DRDO Scientist in 1981. He then settled down in Mangaluru at ‘Sheilanita’, Alvares Road, Kadri.
Mark was married to Emiliana who passed away in 2012. He was blessed with six daughters among who his youngest daughter passed away in 1985.
Mark loved playing chess and bridge and had won several trophies.
His funeral will be held at St Sebastian Church Bendur on Sunday November 8 at 3.30 pm.
