Kundapur, May 4: It is reported that a gang of ten naxals was sighted at Kuntamakki within Madamakki gram panchayat in the taluk at around 9 pm on Friday April 30. It is gathered that the locals are unwilling to share any information they have about the naxal movement with the policemen, in view of the fact that they will have to bear the brunt of the naxal ire and repeated visits and grilling by the members of the Anti Naxal Force (ANF), as a consequence.
Alerted by the news, the policemen have set up barricades at Chakra Maidan Cross and Yedamoge Cross in Padangady, where day and night vigil is being kept to keep watch on criminal activities.
It is thought that the naxals would also have visited Kabbinale, Hamja, Yadamale and Karimane villages, as they have to cross through these places while negotiating the Someshwar ghat region to reach Kuntamakki. Contingents of ANF have been stationed in Jeddinagudde and Amasebail in the taluk. The naxals being aware that the ANF does not conduct combing operations at night choose the time to make the rounds.
In the meantime, the ANF, assisted by the police, has been conducting intensive combing operations in places like Kigga, Begar, Kerekatte, Heggarukoodige and surrounding area near Singeri since the last two days. The teams are briskly involved with the assessment of the naxal movement and threat perception from them, in view of the upcoming gram panchayat elections. It is learnt that the members of the teams are also informing the people about the development initiatives undertaken for their welfare by the government, in addition to questioning them about the naxal movement in the region.
