Mangaluru, Nov 1: Lady Goschen hospital in the city has delivered a record number of babies in the month of October. More than 800 women have safely delivered their babies at the hospital. Out of these 379 are Cesarean and rest are normal deliveries.
Generally, the hospital handles around 450 to 500 deliveries. However, in the month of October, the hospital saw 800 deliveries and September recorded 650 deliveries.
When Covid-19 pandemic started, all pregnant women, who tested positive were sent to Wenlock hospital for treatment as it was identified as Covid hospital of the district. However, since a month a separate Covid block of 23 beds has begun operations in Lady Goschen hospital itself, which has relived the anxiousness of pregnant women.
It is being said that the high bill rates charged by private hospitals during the Covid pandemic, increase in the confidence of people with regards to the services provided in government hospitals and the incredible improvement in the infrastructure of the hospital as the reasons for more number of deliveries in the hospital.
Since many decades financially poor women not only from Dakshina Kannada but from the districts of Udupi, Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru and even Kannur district of Kerala are depending on Lady Goschen for deliveries.
Dr Durgaprasad superintendent, Lady Goschen hospital says, "The increase in the infrastructure at the hospital, number of doctors and paramedical personnel are the reason for the increasing number of patients visiting our hospital. The opening of Covid block has also given good results. It should be noted that most of the women who come for delivering here are from Dakshina Kannada district."
