Kochi: 18 Injured in Emirates Air Pocket Fall

New Delhi/Kochi, April 25 (IANS) At least 18 passengers of an Emirates flight from Dubai to Kerala's Kochi city were injured Sunday morning when their aircraft abruptly fell almost 15,000 feet in an air pocket, an official said.

India's aviation regulator, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has begun investigating the incident.

"The DGCA is carrying out air safety investigations. The aircraft will leave only after it is certified. Emirates airlines flight 530 from Dubai to Kochi reportedly encountered bad weather in turbulence while flying over Arabian sea in which 18 passengers were hurt," said a spokeswoman for the civil aviation ministry.

"The incident happened at 8.50 a.m. The pilot requested for medical assistance on landing with Kochi ATC (air traffic control) which was done. ATC was reported to only when the aircraft was approaching for landing," the spokeswoman said in New Delhi.

The passengers suffered anxious moments when their aircraft fell sharply from 20,000 feet to 5,000 feet before the pilot could bring it back under control. The plane then landed at Kochi under full emergency conditions.

After the plane landed, a team of doctors examined all those passengers who suffered shock and bruises when the aircraft made the sudden descent in the air pocket.

Turbulence just before the monsoon season is a common feature, though not to such extent. DGCA investigation seems to be just routine because to be fair to the passengers it will have to find the reason why the airpocket happened to be there in the path of the Boeing! DGCA knows that it is simply an eyewash, nothing will come of it. If he was so concerned about the passenger travails why does he not investigate the recent diversion of THREE Air-India flights at the behest of the Civil Aviation Minister's daughter who is a nobody in the UPA govenrment?

Imagine the inconvenience caused to the passengers who are either left behind or taken for a ride( pun intended!) by the 24 year-old who has ABSOLUTELY NO AUTHORITY to do so. I myself am witness and at the receiving end of AIR-INDIA's callous attitude towards passengers when a shceduled flight from Mumbai to Kuwait was cancelled for THREE consecutive days with drastic results.

Same reason the aircraft was diverted at the behest of some nobody, like Poorna! Several of the poor passengers, mostly going as housemaids or workers who had to meet the Visa deadline were left high and dry with lapsed Visas and no money to return home to cities like Salem and Trichi. You see they had lost their life's savings paying the agent to get them employment in Kuwait.
DGCA officials should take these offences seriously and give top priority to cases where the poor labourers are ditched by the Natinal Carrier AIR INDIA.

Today's Gulf News says that the aircraft dropped by just 200 feet. The news says it as 15,000 feet. Why such a big discrepancy between the two reports ? What is the reality ? Can someone enlighten us please ?

    Hi Captain, Mabrook...!!!
Thanks God for saving 350 passengers and 14 crew members. Emirates airlines have well trained cockpit crew. Turbulence is caused by the weather either strom clouds or strong winds. The importent thing to remember peoples about turbulence is that although it can be uncomportable it is not dangerous. During the flight always fasten your seat belt.

At Mangalore, are we ready or such emergencies or other potentially catastrophic accidents?
What would be the response time from the declaration of emergency to arrival of rescue?

There is a lot more to investigaste than just recertify the aircraft.

One of the statements, Emirates claims that the altitude loss is ONLY 200 FOOT . Indian news channels says lost altitude is15000 FOOT. If 200 foot , why so many injuries. Of course in such a cruising speed any amount of altitude lost will have high impact on passengers, if seatbelts is not worn. Thanks to God & pilot who managed to control carrier.
