New Delhi, Apr 29: In the aftermath of the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam, which resulted in the loss of 26 lives, predominantly tourists, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan convened a crucial high-level meeting today to thoroughly review the internal security scenario and assess the evolving threat landscape.
The meeting saw the participation of top security officials, including Director General of the Border Security Force (BSF) Daljit Singh Chaudhary, Director General of the National Security Guard (NSG) Brighu Srinivasan, and Director General of the Assam Rifles Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera. Additional Director General of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Anupama Nilekar Chandra, along with key officials from other paramilitary forces, also contributed to the deliberations.
Sources familiar with the meeting revealed to IANS that discussions centered on bolstering border security measures, enhancing counter-terrorism capabilities, and strengthening intelligence sharing and coordination among various forces. This heightened focus comes in response to the increased tensions following the April 22 attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam.
The BSF is primarily responsible for securing India’s borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh, while the SSB safeguards the frontiers shared with Nepal and Bhutan. The Assam Rifles are tasked with monitoring the India-Myanmar border. The NSG, India’s elite counter-terrorism unit, specializes in high-risk operations and urban hostage rescue scenarios.
The Pahalgam attack has prompted a series of swift and significant policy responses from the central government. In a strong diplomatic move, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) decided to suspend the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, accusing Pakistan of violating its provisions. The CCS also issued a directive mandating that all Pakistani nationals – excluding those holding diplomatic, official, or long-term visas – must leave the country by today, April 29.
Following the CCS decision, Union Home Minister Amit Shah personally contacted chief ministers across the nation, instructing them to ensure strict compliance with the exit order for Pakistani nationals. Subsequently, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan held a virtual meeting with state chief secretaries to monitor the implementation of this directive and ensure that individuals with revoked visas depart India before the stipulated deadline.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a strong statement delivered on April 24, vowed to bring the perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack – along with those who support them – to justice. “We will identify, pursue, and punish every terrorist and their enablers. India will go to any length to protect its people,” he asserted.
In a rare display of political unity, leaders from all major political parties pledged their complete support to the government during an all-party meeting convened on the same day. This collective resolve underscored a national consensus for decisive action against terrorism and cross-border extremism.
As security agencies intensify their operational efforts and diplomatic measures escalate, the nation remains on high alert, with vigilance and preparedness taking center stage in India’s response to this latest security challenge.
