Bengaluru, Oct 20: In an important order, the transport department has prescribed suspension of the driving licence for three months if two-wheeler riders are caught riding without helmets. As per the Centre Motor Vehicles Act, it is compulsory for the riders and pillion riders of two-wheelers to wear helmets.
Henceforth, vehicle riders without helmets will be booked under section 194-T of the Motor Vehicles Act and fine will be levied on them In addition, the state government said in an order, duly clarifying that their driving licences would be suspended for a period of three months. People without helmets are charged Rs 1,000.
In the case of riding without insurance, fine of Rs 2,000 is levied. The order says that the Central Motor Vehicles Act which was implemented after amendment, has a mention about this fine.
Children aged above four years need helmets for two-wheeler travel
Henceforth, children aged over 4 years travelling by two-wheelers in the state will have to wear helmets without fail. In case this rule is not followed, the driving licence of the riders will get suspended for three months. The state government has passed this order under instruction of the road safety committee of the Supreme Court.
The government said that this is not a new rule. As per section 129 of the Central Motor Vehicles Act, pillion riders and riders of two-wheelers have to wear helmets without fail. Even though the rule about wearing of helmets by children aged over four was in force, it had not been strictly implemented. The order said that this rule too should be scrupulously followed.
The regional transport officers and staff have been asked to strictly act against violators. They have to send to the joint transport commissioner and additional transport commissioner the number of cases registered, number of cases received through police stations, and number of suspended driving licenses before the fifth of every month.
