Udupi: Couple exhibits love for mother tongue, names daughter 'Kannada'

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Oct 7: At a time when the general perception that the youngsters of today have not been passionate about their mother tongue, Kannada, here is an entrepreneur who has named his daughter who was born in November, as 'Kannada'. Prathap Shetty and Prathima Shetty couple from Nempu in Kundapur taluk are the ones who have exemplified their passion for the Kannada language.

The couple got their first child in the form of Kannada, who was born at Bengaluru on November 27 last year. Prathap Shetty, who is an internal designing contractor by profession, has settled down at Bannerghatta Road in Bengaluru since the last 25 years.

Prathap confesses that during his visits to Tamil Nadu in connection with his profession, he had often come across people named as 'Tamilarasan, Tamiludurai,' etc. He wanted to christen his child similarly so that at least when addressing the child, the word, 'Kannada', gets repeated. He said his wife supported his feelings. "I cannot explain my thoughts about naming my daughter in a few words," he said.

one of the dumbest thing any parents can do..They did not think what will be the situation of that girl when she grows up.

Everyone in school and neighbourhood will ridicule her because of her name. She will definitely face inferior complex problem.

Proudness about anything is good. But it should not go over limit.

    Totally agree
True it's rights of parents to name their child.
But the sarcasm abuse teasing can destroy ones personality of not guided from begining.
Wishing this little one a better world.

Though it's a good initiative. Question is what if the child doesn't like the name when she grows up. Parents have every right to name their kid but they should think of future issues as well. God bless this child Kannada.

there is no rule that people who love mothertongue should not go to english medium school or migrate abroad... english cannot be a substitute for mothertongue, same time mothertongue cannot be substitute for English... with mnc, foreign jobs, specialisations in science, engineering, tech etc. etc. etc. english is must in current world... however mothertongue required to relate to parents, relatives and friends, culture, community... both can co-exist for the benefit of the person...

Sudhakar Byndoor, you are right.Their love for mother tongue is by naming their child is not a good idea.Love for mother tongue can be shown by other methods by helping language to be practiced at home for example than using other language.

what if other children start to make fun of her in school because of her name?sometimes parents dont think of this .Hope the girl too will not be angry with parents later for choosing name.
