Mangaluru, Oct 7: Mangaluru MLAs Dr Bharath Y Shetty and Vedavyas Kamath have voiced strong opinions against the illegal cattle trade that is rampant in the district. Mangaluru North MLA Dr Bharath Shetty has asked the police department to take suitable action against illegal transport of cattle that is in progress and the illegal slaughterhouses that function in the district.
“Theft of cattle brandishing deadly weapons, transporting of cattle left for grazing on roadsides, the violent slaughter of cattle set free and other incidents have occurred repeatedly. Stealing cows of people who depend only on dairy farming is like snatching their livelihood,” said MLA Bharath Shetty.

“Police department should take legal action without fail. If that does not happen, BJP party organizations that are for the protection of cattle and other similar groups will come on to the roads to protest," he warned.
Speaking on the matter, Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyas Kamath said, “There is unrest in Dakshina Kannada due to the illegal cattle trade. Cows are revered in the Hindu religion. Besides that, there are many families in the district that depend on dairy farming. We have seen families lose their livelihood following the theft of their cattle. There should not be disturbances in the district again regarding this matter. The peace of the people should not be disrupted. Therefore, the police department should immediately form teams to act against illegal cattle transporters and illegal slaughterhouses."
“A network of thieves entering temples, threatening people and stealing cattle from temple premises is active in the district. In this circumstance, the police department should get down to action to arrest cattle thieves and maintain law and order,” he said to the officials.
