Mangalore: Boy with Mangalore Roots Shines in World Maths Contest
Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Mar 30: Sharan Maiya (11), son of Dr Srinivas Maiya and Dr Sujata Maiya, who are settled in Glasgow, England, and a student of Hamilton College there, was ranked first in England and Scotland, apart from being placed fourth in the entire world, in the World Maths Day Contest held on March 3.

He was awarded a gold medal for beating 11,33,246 students from 56,082 schools spread over 235 countries across the world. He has also achieved the rare distinction of being placed in the competition’s ‘Hall of Fame’ for the second consecutive year in recognition of his brilliance.

Sharan, grandson of retired general manager of Karnataka Bank Ltd., U Narayan Maiya, wants to be an entrepreneur when he grows up. “Maths is very easy, it comes to me naturally. I have to hone my maths skills further,” he admits. He also adores his maths teacher, who he says, has inspired him to fine-tune his mathematical skills.

Only three students, two from Austrialia and one from United Arab Emirates, were placed above him in the world, in the age group, 9 to 13. His achievements have drawn profuse praises for his skills and achievements from all over, and articles hailing him have been published in several newspapers, particularly those published from England.
