Chennai, Aug 22: Fans and celebrities have been pouring out prayers for the speedy recovery of veteran playback singer S P Balasubramanyam who had tested Covid positive and is said to be stable but on life support at a city hospital.
A mass prayer was held on Thursday, August 20 in which many celebrities including veteran director Bharathirajaa, music composer Ilayaraja, A R Rahman, lyricist Vairamuthu, and actors like Rajnikanth joined praying for his health.
The singer is being treated at MGM Healthcare.
A statement from the hospital on Saturday August 22 read: "Thiru S P Balasubrahmanyam who had been admitted at MGM Healthcare due to COVID-19 continues to be on Ventilator and ECMO support in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). His current clinical condition is stable, and he continues to be closely monitored by our multidisciplinary clinical team."
Assistant director of the hospital, Dr Anuradhan Bhaskaran said, "Our multi-disciplinary team of clinicians have been actively collaborating with national and international experts and continue to closely monitor his vital parameters."
The veteran singer was admitted to the hospital on August 5 and was put on ECMO support, a heart and lung assistance machine.
On Thursday, a mass prayer was organized for the early recovery of the singer. Big names from the Tamil film industry such as veteran director Bharathirajaa, music composers Ilayaraja, A R Rahman, lyricist Vairamuthu and actors, including, Rajinikanth, took part in thee mass prayer while many sung his popular hits. People across Tamil Nadu gathered at their homes or in temples to pray.
Social media platforms also witnessed scores praying for his recovery with hashtags such as "#GetWellSoonSPBSIR" and "#SPBalasubrahmanyam" trending.
