Kasargod: Customs officials seize gold worth Rs 45 lac at Kannur airport, arrest two

Kasargod, Aug 13: The customs officials at Kannur airport have succeeded in confiscating gold ornaments worth about Rs 45 lac which were being illegally transported through the airport.

Two people, both residents of Manjeshwar in the district, have been arrested.

The arrested people have been identified as Sattar and Sameer from Manjeshwar. They had arrived by flights from Sharjah and Dubai.

Customs department has intensified its vigilance at Kannur airport in view of the increased instances of illegal transportation of gold ornaments in the recent past. On August 6, gold ornaments worth Rs 56 lac had been recovered from two residents of Kasargod who had arrived from Dubai.

    these people are bring gold in chappal, underwear, toys..but how come Gulf customs not detecting this eventhough having high tech detecting machines..may be they are thinking its India headache, let them handle.

    Why should they? The money from sales has already been received. India is still stuck with a law dating back to the 1960s. We need to be more practical. reduce import duty and increase quantity one can wear on person and legitimately bring in duty free. The higher the duty the higher the reason to break the law and evade/ avoid tax.

    The law of UAE do not restrict people taking gold out of the country as such even when they detect largo qty they do not take any action however they pass on the info to their Indian counter part where it is illegal .

    Ranga mangalore,No technical devises help when humans are involved in this racket.When they get percent no customs will make their hands dirty.It is a known thing.Sometime when percentage doesnt tally or a sudden change in shift is there,but they have bad luck.Must say not all so.
