Kundapur, Aug 3: Karnataka had implemented a scheme to extend financial assistance to underprivileged families immediately after a death takes place in their kin to enable the relatives to meet expenses connected with the funeral. However because the government has failed to provide grants, the relatives have been waiting for the money since a year of the death of their close ones.
Below poverty line families are eligible for this assistance. However, the families which have applied for the money have been waiting for several months without any idea when the money will come their way. 8,096 people from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have been awaiting financial assistance since long. 1,220 families from Kundapur taluk are yet to get Rs 61 lac due to them. The problem, however, is not confined to these districts, but thousands across the state have been tired of waiting for this money.
In the case of similar schemes meant for tribal families, financial assistance has not been disbursed under the special unit scheme to beneficiary families since 2017. Other categories of families have not received the grant for a year.
Under the scheme, families living below the poverty line and facing financial constraints are eligible to receive financial assistance of Rs 5,000 towards funeral expenses. For this purpose, applications have to be submitted within two months after the death of the family member in a prescribed format. The tahsildar releases funds after getting the details mentioned in the application confirmed.
