Kaup, Jul 31: BJP does not enjoy majority in Kaup taluk panchayat (TP). But its nominee is set to become the TP president. The Congress, which is in majority, will have to be content with the post of the vice president.
New taluk panchayats have been set up in new taluks created recently in the state. Members of Udupi taluk panchayat were divided by separating those representing areas falling within the newly created Kaup taluk panchayat limits. The people, so sorted out, have now become members of Kaup taluk panchayat. For Kaup taluk panchayat, the post of the president has been set aside for lady candidate from backward class (B) category while the post of the vice president has been reserved for general category.
Out of the 12 members of Kaup taluk panchayat, seven members belong to the Congress, with the remaining five belonging to the BJP. But the Congress does not have a lady candidate from backward class B to be nominated to the post of the president. Therefore, the post is set to go to BJP candidate Shashiprabha Shetty. There is competition between U C Shekabba of the Congress and Dinesh Palimaru of the BJP for the post of the vice president. Taluk panchayat acting executive officer, Vivekananda Gaonkar, said that Kundapur assistant commissioner will conduct the election within two weeks.
As the taluk panchayat here does not have its own building, currently, the old Uliyargoly gram panchayat building will be used by repairing it. Taluk panchayat offices will begin functioning there on August 15. Later, a new mini Vidhana Soudha building will be constructed out of MLA fund and other grants near the travellers’ bungalow at Kaup, the MLA said.
