Mangalore, Mar 9: The excise policemen, who raided four godowns on Monday March 8, two located in the Bunder area in the city and the other two in Farangipet, seized 22,900 kgs of rotten jaggery worth Rs 7.50 lac, proposed to be used to brew illicit liquor. They also arrested four persons.
The arrested accused have been named as Sudhir Walke (33), a resident of Bandeshwar Compound, Bokkapatna, Damodar Shenoy (59) from Arkula village besides Nissar F (25) and Krishnappa (57), from Farangipet. The jaggery was found stacked in the form of balls, filled in 458 gunny bags.
Excise superintendent, H Puttaswamy, said that stocking and selling of the jaggery of the above kind, which is unfit for human consumption and injurious to health, is an offence under section 24A of the State Excise Act. The raid was led by K Bheemappa, excise joint commissioner (enforcement and investigation).
