Mangaluru: Increase in demand - Electric crematorium planned at Surathkal

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jul 17: The number of deaths due to coronavirus infection has been rising with each passing day and the government has made necessary preparations for the funerals. At the same time, there is a plan to set up another electric crematorium near Surathkal.

Currently the bodies of the people who die out of COVID-19 infection are cremated at the electric crematorium at Boloor here. Initially, the plan to incinerate the bodies of coronavirus victims there had encountered some resistance. After a meeting led by the district in-charge minister decided to cremate the bodies of COVID patents at Boloor crematorium, the opposition died down and now bodies are cremated there without any problem.

The need for an electric crematorium is felt in Surathkal area which falls under Mangaluru (north) assembly constituency. City mayor Divakar Pandeshwar, has put up a proposal for setting up of one such crematorium at Surathkal. He had suggested that this project can be undertaken under the Smart City Project and that it will meet the crying need for such a facility in Surathkal.

This proposal is being considered by both the district administration and Smart City project officials. The officials propose to move this proposal in the next meeting and depending on the outcome of discussions, further action will be taken.

In the past, the district administration had proposed to perform the cremation of the deceased at Surathkal but the locals had vehemently opposed the proposal. Moreover, an opinion has emerged that totally relying on crematorium can pose problems in the future and that an alternative facility should be available. Therefore, a plan for the new crematorium is under way, it is learnt.
