Mangaluru: Heap of prosthetic limbs in graveyard - Video goes viral

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 5: A heap of prosthetic items from burnt bodies of deceased persons has been sighted in a graveyard in the city. This video has become viral in social media.

In certain cases, particularly accidents, the doctors choose to replace lost or damaged bone or other body parts including teeth, knee, palate, facial bone etc with artificial body parts. In some cases, they are made of steel. Even when the body is consigned to flames, these parts remain as they are among the ashes. But the eagerness of the people stems from the fact that the quantum of artificial limbs found here is quite huge.

The graveyard staff said that this is normal. They said that the normal practice is to put together the limbs and give them to the people who dispose off waste. They, however, said that of late, in most of the case, body parts made of fibre are used and hence they get burnt along with the body.

Dr Annaiah Kulal, president of Mangaluru unit of Indian Medical Association, said that in many cases, steel parts fixed in the body remain as they are when the body is cremated. He said that such cases are very less and felt that the limbs seen in the video that has become viral appear to have been accumulated over several years.
