Mangaluru, May 20: As per the orders of the union department of agriculture, animal husbandry and fisheries, uniform ban on fishing activity will come into force from June 1 onwards. The ban will be uniformly applicable in states located on the west coast. The ban is applicable for a stretch between 12 to 200 nautical miles of special economic zones of these states. It will be in force from June 1 to July 31.
Under the Karnataka Marine Fishing (Regulation) Act, an order has been issued placing blanket ban on fishing activity in Udupi district from June 1 to July 31. As per the order, undertaking fishing by using any nets or other equipment by using mechanized boats and traditional boats using in-board or outboard engines of above ten horse power has been banned.
Fishing boats which violate these orders and the fishermen concerned face the risk of being punished as per Marine Fishing Act 1986 besides losing diesel subsidy for a period of one year. This order, issued in the interests of all the fishermen in coastal area, have to be followed by all the fishermen, a release from the office of the district fisheries deputy director stated.
