Udupi: Heavy rain causes inconveniences, inflicts heavy losses

Udupi, May 13: Due to rain that lashed the city during the morning hours on Tuesday, May 12, an old huge tree got uprooted near Nairkere Road at Brahmagiri in the city. As the tree fell across Nairkere Road and Pilichandi Road, traffic on that section of the city came to standstill. However, the tree did not cause any loss, it is learnt. The municipal authorities later undertook the work of clearing the tree from the road.

Reports say that due to heavy rain and wind experienced during late evening hours on Monday, people suffered heavy losses. Two cattle in the cattle shed of B Sadhu from Kukkundoor village, Karkala, died after a lightning struck. Loss in this incident has been estimated at Rs 35,000. A cow belonging to Indira Putran from Neere village, died causing loss of Rs 15,000.

A tree which fell on the house of Baby Poojrthi in Yermal Bada village caused loss of Rs 3 lac. Similarly, a tree which fell on the house of Babu Bhandary in Kollur village, Byndoor taluk, resulted in loss of Rs 1.5 lac. Several reports of losses have been received from all over the district.

The rain and wind also caused heavy loss at Mukka Mitrapatna as six boats kept on the shore belonging to local fishermen and also pump and nets associated with them got destroyed due to the power of strong wind.

Udupi district received an average of 10.5 mm rainfall on Monday. Udupi city recorded highest of 24.2 mm rainfall.
