Bhatkal, May 9: Seven more people including two children and three elderly people have tested positive for coronavirus in the city. This was confirmed by the state health and family welfare in its health bulletin.

On Friday, 12 people of the city had tested positive for Covid-19. The throat swab of 60 people, who were in contact with the 12 affected people was sent to laboratory for testing. Out of this six people of the family of the 18-year-old girl who had tested positive on Friday and a friend of her are now confirmed to have tested positive for Covid-19 pandemic.

The infected seven people include one and a half year old baby, two and a half years old toddler, two girls aged 17 and 23, and two elderly men aged 65 and 68 and a 50-year-old woman.

It may be recalled, the source of this infection is the First Neuro hospital located at Padil in Mangaluru city. Elder sister and brother-in-law of the infected young woman of Bhatkal had gone to Mangaluru on April 19 as their child was not well. They stayed in the house of a known person, got the child treated on April 20 and had returned back to Bhatkal. So the 18-year-old woman, who was in contact with them acquired the infection.

Now the tally of Covid-19 positive cases have reached 31 in the city of Bhatkal itself. Out of this 11 people are already discharged from the hospital after successful recovery. Rest 20 are under treatment now.

The rising number of infected people in the taluk has caused great concern not only to the residents of the taluk but the whole district of Uttara Kannada.

SP Shivprakash Devaraju, who held a press meet said, “As 12 new coronavirus positive cases have come up in Madina colony of Bhatkal, extra precautions are being taken here. I have personally visited Bhatkal and held discussion with officers there. Entire Bhatkal town containment zone is divided into 5 zones. Madina colony region is separated from all other zones and from the main road using permanent bamboo barricades. There will be only one exit and entry point into the colony, guarded all the time by police. Madina colony is completely sealed down.

“Other regions will be also sealed in a day or two where each of these five regions will have only one entry and exit point. Police bandobust is arranged for each region separately. There will be patrolling unit in each region and there will be an in-charge officer for each region. There will picketing points also in each region. Drone surveillance will be done in all regions and violators will be photographed and booked.

“All shops will be closed including medical shops and petrol pumps based on the order by district administration. Essential services including medicines will be supplied only to houses. The list of vans and in-charge’s region wise will be given by deputy commissioner or additional commisoner. But the vans and in-charges will be minimum in number.

“There will be region wise in-charge from police and administration and public for any help or any medical assistance, shall contact them. Help line number shall also function 24/7 for any assistance. For medical emergencies, maximum two attendees shall be allowed only through Government ambulances. Any movement of people in the containment zone will lead to criminal action and will be dealt very strictly. Extensive health screening shall be done by medical teams with the help of police teams.

“Finally an appeal to Bhatkal people is that please take this lockdown seriously. It is our duty to cooperate with the health teams. If there is any symptoms related to coronavirus, immediately inform the authorities. Required help shall be provided.

“Do not pay heed to rumours that are against the administration. The administration is here to help you. People who are circulating fake messages will be caught and will be punished,” he said.

    I have some doubts.
    1. In bhatkal, they found people with close contact including neighbours and their children to be positivel within 2 to 3 days.

    2. In Mangalore, it is taking weeks to know that same family members or neighbours are positive, but positive it does come. 5 members of boloor family took a week

Why ? Is it because they were not positive in first instance? Or is it testing not done extensively? I am confused.

... as per WHO, a person cured with COVID-19 will never be re-infected. If this is the case, then these cured patients should not be afraid of any thing and also need not follow any protocols like social distancing, wearing mask, sanitizing and even mingling with COVID patients !!!

Economic repercussions will be too much of a price to pay.. .., 250 million people worldwide on verge of starvation; by now, we should have known that we have one of the lowest mortality rates, & taken a calculated & pragmatic view & kickstarted the failing economy which will be much much painful & prolonged to recover than CORONA itself!

Yes, One doctor in charge of Tuberculosis in the past & retired now has opined why take these drastic steps like present day doctors & health workers do in wearing PPE's, masks & gloves?
He says Tuberculosis is 7 time more contagious( 1 infected person infects around 14 people) than this covid & his professor used to tell them don't wear masks or gloves when entering the patients ward where the bacteria used to be airborne, but develop your immune systems, they used to spend nearly an hour to 2 hours when coming back after attending all the patients.
4.4 millions people die every year in India due to Tuberculosis, why no hue & cry for this far deadlier infectious disease but only for this global pandemic which is with the lowest mortality rate like any Flu infections?

Exactly, now MDMR TB is a very very dreaded infection, not responding to any treatment! CORONA conundrum is not comparable to it! Hence, we cannot compare ourselves with advanced countries & blindly follow their protocol???

BTW, a very large of our population suffers from "latent TB", which doesn't show any symptoms!!

Shashidar, transmission mode & ferocity of any TB, be it MDRTB, XDRTB is the same; just because the TB is MDR, it is not necessary for the victim to be in contact with the patient for a longer time interval!

There is a large % of the population who suffer from latent TB, are asymptomatic but do not transmit TB!

Very sad to hear about the new cases .I understand your point but I think that your figures for tuberculosis in India are incorrect. I read that there are an estimated incidence rate of 2.6 million cases of tuberculosis in India every year, with approximately 220,000 ( 2.2 lakh) yearly deaths. Air pollution is responsible for more than a million yearly deaths. Even influenza is responsible for more than 650,000 deaths yearly around the world.
Even so this is difficult. It is up to the average person to work together and support our leaders and workers.

Every 2 years there is an influenza epidemic that kills people in lakhs,(more abroad than in India)this time they have given a name to it.It started when the trade war b/w US and China was at the peak, there was trouble in Hong Kong ,and elsewhere, even in India. We were caught on the crossfire, because fear and panic was created.Mortality % in Malaria,Dengue Tuberculosis, lifestyle diseases and road accidents is many times more.,but life would go on as usual.I do not understand why this hue and cry for Corona! As far as lockdown is concerned the remedy is worse than the disease.

Well in india more people are dying due to lockdown morbidity than the virus itself. As for MDR TB, a person has to be in contact with the victim several times to get infected. But yes, the nationwide lockdown that we had seemed unnecessary. They should have done large scale testing instead and identified hotspots. Mere lockdown cannot break the chain.

The reason why covid is treated differently compared other pandemics is due to asymptomatic cases. A person can have the virus and spread to others without even knowing that. That is why this became a worldwide pandemic. Sars and mers cov didn't show asymptomatic cases and hence they were able to contain it to one specific region.

    @ Bhaskar
Yes, have to change it to Lakhs from Million
This figure is from reliable source which gives it only after verifying with govt. records.
"While the number of TB cases fell by 50,000 between 2017 and 2018, the number of deaths from TB increased by 30,000. In 2018, 4.4 lakh people died from TB and the corresponding number was 4.1 lakh in 2017."
But even then, at least 5.3 lakh TB patients could be missing from the government’s surveillance. While 2.69 million people are estimated to have TB as per the new report, only 2.1 million are notified

Dev.... I have one clarification here... In my neighbourhood there was a man with tuberculosis. He was locked after by his family at his home itself. He was getting admitted often. Four years before he expired. But, by god's grace no one in the family got infected. His wife too is old. He was coughing etc. If it's contagious how come it didn't affect (god forbid) anyone. .all are safe.. 🙏🙏..

Because the droplets have to get into your system several time for a person to get infected. It is not as virulent as covid. In the case of covid, a person next to you can be showing no symptoms and still affect you.

Cynthia, i have seen several such patients wherein if the family members take proper precautions/cleanliness, give regular antitubercular drugs to the patient, have a good diet they will not get infected or may get infected & go to latent TB!
TB is always routinely associated with the lungs, which is very easy to diagnose & treat; there is extra pulmonary TB, which can attack any organ of the body, sometimes very difficult to diagnose & treat if it attacks some deep seated organ or the spine!!
TB in presence of HIV is very deadly due to the weak immunity of the victim!

Exactly the point I made- unless your immunity is compromised nobody gets it(TB) or any other illnesses or infections. Only small kids are in danger.
Same case by this corona too, it enters the system & our immune system just eliminates it without us knowing,
Then the question is why more have fallen or got infected by corona - the more you test the more you find(though test kit itself of is questionable nature right now).
A virologist opines the more deadlier virus are less contagious while the less deadlier viruses infect more. A cold virus is more contagious just like this corona & lesser is its mortality rate.

If it the right measures are taken by government , it can be eradicated. Our own neighbouring state kerala has no new cases coming up and only 16cases active. Inspite of having highest cases in india earlier, they tackled it so well.
Here they are going on relaxing lockdown instead of taking strict measures. We are sitting on a time bmb which will explode soon.
