NRIs Can Vote by Next General Elections- Manmohan Singh

New Delhi, Jan 8 (IANS) NRIs will be able to cast their votes by the time the country holds its next general elections, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said here Friday.

"I recognise the legitimate desire of Indians living abroad to exercise their franchise and to have a say in who governs India," the prime minister told the annual conclave for the Indian diaspora.

"We are working on this issue and I sincerely hope that they will get a chance to vote by the time of the next regular general elections," he said at the eighth edition of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.

"In fact, I would go a step further and ask why more overseas Indians should not return home to join politics and public life as they are increasingly doing in business and academia."

Some 1,500 delegates from 50-plus countries are attending the conclave that the country hosts annually to connect with its 25 million diaspora in 130 countries.

The prime minister said while people all over were legitimately proud of India's vibrant democracy, the government had not been able to deliver in full measure on the enormous promise and potential of the country.

"I recognise the frustration well wishers feel when they lament why things don't work faster or why well formulated plans and policies don't get implemented as well as they should be."

He said there was a price India was paying to carry all sections of its people along in national development, but that was a price worth paying.

"It is probably true we are a slow moving elephant but it is equally true that with each step forward we leave behind a deep imprint."

Good news at last...! Dear Abdul Rahman Dubai, you have commented that, If NRI's are given voting rights, BJP will be immersed in the Arabian sea. don't be so over confident. You know the GDP groth for the year 2008-2009,Gujarat 11.05%, Bihar-11.04%(un believeable), Uttarkand 9.31%,Orissa-8.74^% Jharkand-8.45%. You know why? all these states are governed by Non-Congress Govt. The Next turn will be surely Karnataka because of huge investments are coming to the state. I think your imagination is wrong dear, if the NRI votes he will vote only for congress, why? for pseudo secularism. I have been reading Daijiworld last one year, most of the time i have read the majority of the minority brothers & sisters comments are very arrogant towards the majority community. Recently there was one sensitive news of Ramya shetty's disappearnce, contents 65 comments posted and some comments are highly deplorable, while there was a very good news for our state, Mr.Laxmi Mittal is going to invest RS.30,000 Crore (First ever)in Karnataka, whcih is going creat 90,000 employments ther are only 15 gentlemen posted some appreciation. Come on guys!

With technology and internet today, every NRI knows what happens in his country, state and district. They also have relatives to give a feedback. At least on an average, the NRI returns home once a year to see the same state of the roads, water, electricity, and other socio-economic conditions of people. So it is a welcome move by the government. There are additional benefits as it adds to Indians democratic muscle and a greater say in the International diaspora.

The voting rights for NRI will change the political equation of India, far greatly in favour of the Congress party. Besides, it will be an added incentive for the NRI to invest in India with confidence, and the invetment will help to boost the economy, so more jobs in India.

How many Indians were killed all over the world in a year dear Mr. Nagesh Nayak? And count how many Indians were killed within India by Indians. Are you making a mountain out of a mole? I salute Dr. Manmohan Singh and am proud of him because of his clean image, clean administration, humble and dependable Prime Minister respected within India and all over the world who is an architect of the Indian economy. One more feather on his cap by allowing non-residents right to vote. Not by compulsion but by a person's own will. Compulsion will never work anywhere in the world

NRIs participating in election would certainly bring trasformation in Indian election.since they have more experience of world politics their votes will bring a good party to the rule, which would certainly result in better growth of the country. At least vote bank politics on religion and corruption would reduce for a large extent.

Excellent initiative by the UPA govt. Equally, it is stupid idea to make voting compulsory, when there is no option to reject a candidate. When you have murder and underworld don contesting election- what can compulsory vote can do?

Its marcah forward in the right diretion and in democratic spirit. Some ardent patrons of BJP are upset and commenting out of frustration as they know that NRIs can bring about change in the political scenario and "a party with difference and discipline" shall be voted out once and for all and these NRIs can hit the last nail to the coffin of already disintegrating/dissolving party. Truth is bitter.

Manmohan Singh is manmohan and it shows only Congress works and BJP a party of opportunist. Nagesh naik you are right voting should be made compulsory ever since advani's party lost the elections, and but there are many more compulsory things to be looked into, like compulsory poverty eradication. Jai HO Manmohan, to hell with opportunist.

Good decision to include NRIs in exercising their legitimate right. The thinking is ripe after 60 years. Dear H.E. Prime Minister and NRI Businessmen, please open Free Zones on the simiar lines of JAFZA or RAK and invite investments in high end Infrastructure and technology & research based Companies for generating more employment to highly skillful Indian technocrats and skilled workforce. Thus lets save Indians for managing our own resource and make them part in our rapid Industrialisation. Save Indians for a developed India.
