Bengaluru: Gram panchayat elections in state postponed

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, May 6: Gram panchayat general elections in the state are being postponed. The state government has decided to take up the matter of postponement of elections with the election commission.

Terms of a large number of gram panchayats in the state will end on May 15. By then the election was to be held but because of lockdown, no preparations have been made for the same. The government has decided to seek a postponement for the reason that the situation in the state is not congenial for holding elections.

A decision on this issue was taken at a cabinet meeting held under the leadership of minister K S Eshwarappa on Tuesday, May 5. Briefing the media persons after the meeting, Eshwarappa said that administrative officer or administrative committee would be appointed to manage the affairs of local bodies during the intervening period and that a letter has already been sent to the election commission seeking to postpone the elections.
