Mangaluru, May 5: Heavy rain and wind which swept through Mardhala, Nekkilady, Koila, Ramakunja and Alankaru villages in Kadaba taluk inflicted heavy losses on farmers by way of uprooted areca nut trees, destroyed fields and fallen trees following the uprooting of electric poles.
After a tree fell on the house of Tangappa Maistry in Bolantadka, Aithoor village, the entire roof of the house was demolished. Houses of Pademajalu Nassir, Kerpada Ramanna Gowda and 10 other houses were damaged. The roof of a government school at Kermayi in Nekkilady blew away and over 20 electric poles were damaged. Rubber and areca nut trees fell to the ground. A coconut tree at Hoigekere in Kadaba village burnt down on account of lightning.
A number of buildings were damaged and trees fell down in and around Uppinangady. Beltangady MLA Harish Poonja visited the spot and disbursed financial assistance personally. He also promised to get compensation sanctioned by the government.
The power supply was severed in Peruvaje, Indaje, Kalanja around Bellare due to fallen electric poles. A number of houses in Sullia taluk were damaged. Sheets forming roof of a house belonging to Gulabi Anand at Jayanagar blew away and things inside her house soaked in rain.
