Mangaluru, May 4: COVID-19 is that infectious disease that spreads from person to person. One of the common ways of spreading is when an infected person coughs or sneezes and a healthy person inhales those small droplets through the nose or mouth. In order to protect against flying respiratory droplets that transmit the virus, a team comprising of chief innovation officer Johnson Tellis, design engineer Gautham Nayak and DreamWorks Makerspace run by determined students and supported by Sahyadri start-up ecosystem at Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management developed face shields to help the front-line healthcare workers.
The team took the initiative along with other maker communities in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi and the likes, with a pledge to produce and deliver over 1 million face shields across India. In a span of three weeks, the team has contributed to the cause and delivered more than 3,500 face shields and ventilator splitters to the Dakshina Kannada and Shivamogga region.
Innovation ecosystem at Sahyadri:
Social innovation is at the epicentre of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management. Led by a vision to make an impact both in the lives of emerging torchbearers of the nation and in the society, Sahyadri has been consistently promoting and working towards community-centric entrepreneurship. Sahyadri houses over three industries, eight in-house start-ups, four of which have been funded by Elevate Karnataka Scheme.
Currently, the Sahyadri start-up ecosystem is focused to join hands with the government, financial, industrial and public institutions discussing the ways to overcome the aftermath of the pandemic through the creation of alternate jobs, re-skilling migrant workers and filling the gap of supply and demand for jobs. At Sahyadri, leaders and teams are constantly working towards the next set of tasks at hand, to emerge as a pioneer in the field of education.
