Kundapur, May 2: The personnel of the Coast Guard with the assistance of the Coastal Security Force personnel at Karwar, have succeeded in taking into custody two Goa-based fishing boats which were found to be conducting light-based fishing.
In spite of lockdown in force, a big boat named Dragon Sea and another small boat, which were catching fish off Karwar by using lights, were taken into custody by the Coast Guard police on patrol duty near Karwar, with the support of Coastal Security Police Force. 23 fishermen from Odisha and three from Ankola were quarantined in the respective boats.
There has been a number of complaints from fishermen from Gangolli, Maravanthe, Karar, Malpe etc about people from other states conducting light based fishing that is banned in Karnataka.
The boats were taken into custody during late night hours on Thursday. For further action, the same have been handed over to fisheries department.
Coastal Security Force superintendent of police, R Chetan, said that people who find fishermen from other states engaged in fishing, may pass on information to the Coast Guard.
