Convicts in Goa released on parole to be isolated on return

Panjim, Apr 17: About 40 inmates from the Colvale Central jail have been granted parole and shall be made to reside separately upon return, said an official. Over the past few days, a few inmates have been repeatedly demanding that they be released on parole like it was being done in the prisons of other states.

Parole applications that have been sanctioned had been put on hold since the mid of February. The jail authorities justified not accepting the demands on the grounds that such measures need not be taken as the Colvale jail, unlike other jails, was not overcrowded.

After discussion with the state level committee, a few inmates have been released on parole, an official said. Around 40 inmates have been allowed to go on parole, the time period for each ranging from 15-30 days, informed Gurudas Pilarnkar, the Inspector General of Prisons (IGP).

He also said that the jail had adequate available cells to house these inmates in isolation after they complete their parole period.
