Udupi, Apr 12: The state government has allowed the traditional fishermen using country boats carrying five fishermen to resume fishing activity from Sunday, April 12. Restrictions on use of fisheries jetty, fishing ports and mechanized fishing will continue.
Those undertaking fishing activities have been told to practice social distancing. The fishermen leave for fishing at night and they have been asked to conclude the auction process by 11 am.
The issue was discussed by fisheries minister Kota Srinivas Poojary, with leaders of traditional fishermen at the travellers' bungalow here on Friday. On Saturday, chief minister B S Yediyurappa declared his decision to extend concession to traditional fishermen. Fisheries Federation president Yashpal Suvarna said that it has been decided to hold an auction of fish catches at Hejamady, Padubidri, Yermal, Uchila, Kaup Lighthouse, Mattu, Malpe Padukare, Madikal in Kundapur, Koderi, Maravanthe, Kanchigodu, Gangolli Lighthouse, Kody, and Alvegadde.
Suvarna stated that the minister was requested to direct the department to provide kerosene for fishing, and also to extend the insurance facility, at a meeting attended by various fishermen leaders.
