Udupi, Mar 8: A man, who had destroyed the cement bench that was erected by the panchayat near the Padukere beach of Kutpady village near here six years ago, was sentenced to one year of observation and fined Rs 3,500.
Yogish Salian is the person who was fined and asked by the court to be placed in probation for a year. He was using the public cement bench for his personal use. When the public raised a complaint about this with the panchayat, Yogish had smashed the cement bench with a hammer and destroyed it completely and caused a loss of Rs 3,500 to the panchayat. A case was registered by the panchayat in the local police station.
The then SI of Udupi city police station Madhu T S had submitted the charge-sheet against the convict to the court. Justice M N Manjunath of First Additional CJ and JMFC court of Udupi, who conducted the inquiry opined that the crime of the accused is proved. He ordered accused Yogish Salian to be kept under observation under the Criminal Testing rule and also asked Yogish to pay Rs 3,500 to Kadekar panchayat as compensation.
Law officer Mumtaz of the city had argued for the prosecution.
